Traveling to 20+ countries, I feel that I have barely touched the surface of our earth. There is so much to see, and I love watching so many others explore and share their experiences on YouTube and Instagram. Some of my favorites are:
Another love of mine is photography. The world really is beautiful, and there is infinite art and history to discover… not to mention people to meet. Photography is a hobby that I enjoy sharing with others who are not always able to travel and explore.
Travel has always been a passion and a joy of mine ever since I studied in Sevilla, Spain during my college semester abroad. It was then that I traveled through 7 countries…mostly alone. This was decades before cell phones, Google maps, eSIMs, Siri, and selfies. You had to know where you were going, plan way ahead, print out your tickets, and bring a camera. Those were the fun days!!
I do have to say that I enjoy using Plan Buddy for multiple ideas with itineraries. Google Flights is better for me than Skyscanner. But I do like playing around with Momondo. I have so many apps on my phone for planes, trains, hotels, and automobiles (use Bolt over Uber when available in Europe) that I really hope I don’t lose my phone! There are so many people giving travel tips these days, and I watch as many as I can. Decades ago, I watched all the Rick Steves shows and even bought his guides (again..before cell phones). I’m still not the best with point hacks, but the Points Guy can tell you all about that.
Some of my new favs are Camden David, Nora Dunn, and of course my peeps, Amelia and JP.
One of the best, most difficult, yet most rewarding things about travel is that it challenges you to step outside your comfort zone and adapt to new environments. You learn to navigate unfamiliar situations and broaden your problem-solving skills - especially if you are a solo traveler. I am of the mindset that you should learn at least some of the language of the country you visit. Last year, I was studying 8 languages. That was WAY too crazy. So I have narrowed it to 4…in addition to English. It always amazes me when I meet someone who is a polyglot. My heroes!
One thing that a lot of people don’t know about me is that I have multiple hidden disabilities. I look like I can operate pretty well…even if I am looking older. Unfortunately, as I age, things are getting more difficult. Thankfully, I found the organization Hidden Disabilities Sunflower. They have created lanyards, buttons, wristbands and more for people to wear in order to volunteer that they have a hidden disability and may need help…or are the carer for someone with a disability.
There are over 900 non-visible disabilities, conditions or chronic illnesses that others may not be aware of. HD Sunflower has partnered with companies around the world, including airlines. So if you or a loved one needs help, please look them up: www.hdsunflower.com. I wear my lanyard and personalized card, and I have already received assistance lifting my suitcase which helps greatly. Spread the love.
